Why StoneRed exists
The internet used to be a place where you could fall through a trapdoor.
You'd go looking for a bus timetable and end up, forty minutes later, on a hand-coded page about medieval lighthouse keepers, written by someone who clearly loved them. Nobody had optimised it. Nobody wanted anything from you. It was just there, waiting to be found.
StoneRed is an attempt to bring that feeling back.
Every day, one story. Strange history, stubborn mysteries, beautiful science, people who should be famous and aren't. Chosen because it is interesting, not because it is important.
No endless feed. No productivity hacks. No doomscrolling. No account. Your bookmarks live on your device and nowhere else.
We separate what is known from what is merely suspected, and we tell you which is which. We cite our sources. When something is weird, we say so. When it is weird and true, we get very excited.
The name? Two of the oldest ways humans ever left messages for strangers: carving them into stone, and painting them in red — ochre, the earthy pigment on some of the oldest cave walls we know. Both were meant to be stumbled upon by someone, someday, who would stop and wonder. So is this.
There are 34 stories in the archive so far. Tomorrow there will be one more.
