Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji)
Katsushika Hokusai, c. 1830–1832
Just three colours, almost: a red mountain, a blue sky, a strip of green forest. It's one of the simplest and most powerful landscapes ever made.
This print belongs to the same series as Hokusai's Great Wave, the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It shows the mountain at a particular moment — in late summer or early autumn, when the morning sun can make the volcano's slopes glow red.
Hokusai was around seventy when he made the series, and it was a huge success, so popular that he added ten more views. Those rows of tiny clouds, the stripes of snow at the summit, the slope curving up like a wave of rock: an enormous mountain, distilled into almost nothing.
Look for
- The mountain glowing red in the early morning
- Rows of little white clouds like fish scales
- Dark green forest at its foot
